Businesses urged to put people with disabilities on payroll

A MACKAY employment service has been inundated with work experience offers from companies willing to give people with a disability job opportunities.

Ideal Placements was seeking employers to take on more than 30 clients to give them a taste of working life, and ended up with more companies than it had work experience participants.

Ideal Placements job co-ordinator Pam Ackerman said the event, marking the International Day of People with a Disability, allowed participants to take up roles including labouring work at mining equipment manufacturers Jenmar, retail with IGA, and working alongside Cr Alison Jones.

"It's great that people have taken them on for the day," Ms Ackerman said.

"We also need businesses to follow through - to give more kids a go, and put them on paid work. If not the worker they had for the day, then maybe another suitable person."

Jenmar Queensland assistant manager Mick Baker took on participant Jack Dowling.

"It's important for companies to participate and provide opportunities for everyone in the community," Mr Baker said.

Jack, 17, who left school two weeks ago, has a few career options in mind.

"I like physical work. Today I've been watching and learning. It's really interesting," he said.
