Family wants to give back to cancer support organisation

IT WAS in 2012 that mother-of-two Tamsyn Kiely was diagnosed with a severe brain condition, only to find out two years later that her son Anthony had leukaemia.

But the Kiely family refused to let it get them down.

Now, finally getting back to some form of normality since her son has been able to come home after 11 months of treatment in Brisbane, Tamsyn wanted to do something for the not-for-profit organisation Childhood Cancer Support who cared for Anthony and the whole family while they were away from home.

"We stayed at the Childhood Cancer charity house for 10 of the 11 months we had to stay in Brisbane," Tamsyn said.

"Because my husband and daughter had to try to carry on with normal life back at home, having the accommodation taken care of was one thing off our mind."

Tamsyn has organised a fundraiser Lunch With Laughs at Footlights Theatre Restaurant on November 8 to give back to the organisation that got her family through such a tough time.

"Anthony is back home now, and even though he is still on active treatment, including daily oral chemotherapy he is doing well overall, but being back at school with his buddies and at home together has made a big difference," she said.

"My husband and daughter were also able to come down and stay at Childhood Cancer Support with us when they visited which made a big difference, whereas most other places don't really allow for more than the patient and primary carer to stay."

Tamsyn said she'd been able to maintain her condition called idiopathic intracranial hypertension, with a healthy diet and lifestyle.

"I think it was good in a way that I went through this before Anthony was diagnosed because it prepared us a lot as a family," she said.
