Gladstone ABC axed as part of $254 million in funding cuts

THE ABC is set to close its Gladstone radio post as part of moves to implement $254 million in cuts.

Managing director Mark Scott announced yesterday the Gladstone studio and four other regional radio posts across the country will be closing.

He said the sites needed continual maintenance, the number of staff impacted was minimal, and there were no implications for content.

"The ABC will always have and need a strong regional footprint," Mr Scott said.

"But we need to be responsible in how we allocate resources, and maintaining these sites is not best practice."

The other "very small regional radio posts" to be closed are Wagin in Western Australia, Morwell in Victoria, Port Augusta in South Australia and Nowra in New South Wales.

There hasn't been an ABC reporter based in Gladstone for some time, with editorial staff working out of Rockhampton.

About 400 ABC staffers, 10% of its workforce, face redundancy under massive changes to the public broadcaster.
