Pub recognised for safety steps

THE Allenstown Hotel has been hailed as a top performer in the Safer Venues Awards, set up to protect staff and patrons from alcohol-related violence.

It is a welcome honour for the pub where a random glassing attack on a passing stranger outraged the city.

Duane Warcon, 19, admitted assault occasioning bodily harm while armed and will face court a second time after police appealed against the leniency of his sentence.

The attack in May left his victim, Douglas Robertson, with permanent facial scars. He received 40 stitches in his wounds, which were inflicted in the outdoor drinking area of the hotel.

Warcon has since been banned for life from all 16 venues which are members of the Rockhampton Liquor Industry Action Group. He is also forbidden to enter all the pubs and hotels on the Capricorn Coast.

Karen Upton, the prevention programs officer for Safer Venues, praised the Allenstown Hotel for the way it had responded to the glassing incident.

“It was an isolated, random act of violence by an individual and could not have been prevented.

“Unfortunately, no amount of effort can eliminate the risk of such an attack, but all the venues in the program have committed to do everything in their power to improve the safety of customers and staff and make it possible for everyone to have a good time in a safe environment.”

Participating venues have been assisted in a series of safety audits and have been judged on responsible service of alcohol training, lighting and security, access, fire and emergency evacuation and general safety.

The Safer Venues program is a Queensland Health initiative in collaboration with the liquor action group and Rockhampton Regional Council.

Deputy Mayor Rose Swadling congratulated the licensed venues for taking a lead role in the campaign to promote safety.

She encouraged licensees, police and other agencies to work together to rid the city of the scourge of alcohol-related violence.
