Glen Innes prison escapee still at large

POLICE are searching for a man who escaped from the Glen Innes Correctional Centre on Tuesday night.

Marcus Kenneth Buchannan, 33, is one of two prisoners who reportedly escaped from the minimum security correctional centre about 9pm on Tuesday.

One of the men was detained about 6am yesterday on the Gwydir Highway by a correctional officer, who was driving to work from the Glen Innes township.

"I stopped when I came across a man soaking wet from rain, walking on the roadway towards town," he said.

"I thought his car might have broken down. When I got closer I noticed he was wearing prison greens."

Mr Reynolds recognised the inmate and told him to get in the car. He complied.

"I drove back into Glen Innes and handed the 33-year-old man over to the Sergeant at the police station before continuing to work," he said.

Buchannan is still at large.

It is understood he was serving a one year sentence for assault and has links to the Coffs Harbour area.

He is described as Aboriginal in appearance, medium build, 165cm tall, with brown hair and brown eyes.

He is missing part of his little finger on his right hand and has various tattoos including a cross on his left hand.

Anyone who sees Marcus Kenneth Buchanan is urged not to approach him but contact police immediately on Triple Zero.
