Gogango wins $5000 for one classroom school, 12 students
THERE'S nothing like friendly rivalry to get things moving.
For those at Gogango State School, located about 65 km west of Rockhampton, it was enough to win them $5000 to go towards a classroom makeover as part of a Morning Bulletin run competition.
With only 12 students, they didn't have high hopes.
But with the support of the family and friends of those in the small community, they managed to collect 781 tokens - an average of 65 per student.
Yasmine Nobbs is the parent of one of the grade two students, with her second child set to join the prep class next year.
She was a real driver of the competition, collecting the tokens and counting them herself.
Yasmine saw the competition advertised in the paper and registered Gogango after seeing a neighbouring school had entered.
She said winning the $5000 for the school felt like she won it for herself.
"We'll be able to get so many resources for our kids … things in our library can be updated," Yasmine said.
"We really appreciate that when we do have a smaller school community, that so many people were willing to help us out.
"We thought because there are so many larger schools, we still didn't think we would actually come through and get it."
The school has one classroom building, an admin building and a resource centre for the 12 students from prep to grade seven.
