Meter Maids not ‘sophisticated’ enough

IN one of many lighter moments during yesterday's Going for Gold symposium, an audience member asked why there were no more national Meter Maid tours.

Harking back 30 years when respected former mayor and city icon Sir Bruce Small led national and global promotional tours with the city's gold bikini-clad Meter Maids in tow, sitting Mayor Tom Tate said: "I love the Meter Maids. What Bruce did was something that put us on the map and we celebrate that but that's part of our heritage.

"Moving forward the Gold Coast is so much more than that, we're a much more sophisticated city.

"When tourists come and see the Meter Maids there, it's wonderful but they don't need to be front and centre. Front and centre of our city is beaches, the green behind the gold, people's' hospitality and our lifestyle."

Gold Coast Games Legacy Advisory Committee chair and former Premier Rob Borbidge added: "The Gold Coast represents the new Australia.

"As well as being the top tourist destination in the country there is so much else going on. As important and as successful as Sir Bruce Small's adventures were 30 years ago, we have grown up a bit."
