Good win for Murray Goodwin at Stawell Gift

QUEENSLANDER Murray Goodwin has won the Stawell Gift.

Starting off 6.5m metres, Goodwin stormed home in the 120m handicap event to beat Luke Houlihan by 0.17 of a second.

Houlihan had been the favourite after qualifying fastest for the final in 12.02 seconds but a couple of stumbles following a slow start cost him and Goodwin won the final in 12.10 seconds with Brendan Matthews third in 12.37.

"I got out of the blocks well today," Goodwin (pictured) told Channel Seven.

"It was always going to be close in the final and I just had to keep going through the process I've gone through all season."

Ballarat teenager Grace O'Dwyer won the women's final, running off 10.25 metres.

The 16-year-old won in a time of 13.40 seconds.

O'Dwyer is the daughter of former Gift finalist Peter O'Dwyer, who could never take the men's crown in his career.
