Governments on all levels to tackle unemployment

FEDERAL, state and local government representatives will unite with Rockhampton business and community leaders on Friday to tackle unemployment in the region.

Despite recent economic growth, Rockhampton's unemployment rate sits at 7.4%.

In the past two years it has fluctuated between 9.3% and 6/9%.

Rockhampton Region Mayor Margaret Strelow said now was the time to act.

Cr Strelow said she was happy to hear realistic suggestions from "around the table", she wanted them to be ones which could see people earning again within months.

"The downturn in the coal industry is now starting to bite deeper and, despite our diverse economy, we are suffering," she said.

"The response from representatives of all levels of government has been unanimously supportive.

"A quick phone around showed that we are all concerned and keen to see what can be done."

Livingstone Shire Councillors have been invited to join with Rockhampton Regional Councillors to address this issue.
