Graduates sound out careers in sonography

CQUNIVERSITY'S Medical Sonography graduates are being snapped up by employers throughout Australia and New Zealand.

That's according to Discipline Lead for Medical Sonography Anita Bowman, who says that 100 per cent of 2014 graduates found work, while 97 per cent of fourth-year students have already found work prior to graduating in 2015.

"All 15 of our 2014 Sonography graduates from Mackay campus are working in Melbourne, Brisbane and regional Queensland, including Bundaberg, Cairns, Townsville, Mackay and the Sunshine Coast," Ms Bowman says.

"Meanwhile, 31 of our 2015 Sonography graduates from Mackay and Sydney campuses are working in New Zealand, Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, regional Queensland, regional NSW and regional Victoria."

Work placements are a crucial element of CQUniversity's Bachelor of Medical Sonography and Graduate Diploma of Medical Sonography, which is Australia's only four-year combined undergraduate/postgraduate program.

Tanya Au Yeung is doing her Sonography work placement with her current employer, Benson Radiology in Adelaide, renowned for being the first in Australia to introduce automated breast ultrasound technology.

Preparing to progress into the Graduate Diploma phase of her studies next year, Ms Au Yeung is employed as a sonographer assistant while effectively working as a trainee sonographer.

She thanks her husband and family for supporting her goals to graduate from CQUni and to become a 'super sono' with Benson Radiology.

"It's taken a lot of understanding and support from my husband and family to make me a success story for sure.

"We also moved from Sydney to Adelaide in the middle of the program, with me staying in Sydney to complete the on-campus courses and commuting to Adelaide during breaks. It's been challenging but it's all turned out well."

Tanya was born in Hong Kong to a Chinese family at a time when British colonial influence meant observing two sets of customs.

She attended a British school in Hong Kong before completing high school and university in Australia.

"My first degree was in IT and then I did an international MBA in the USA. My first career was in IT and it spanned software engineering, telecom project management and financial audits," Tanya said.

"Whilst in IT, this career saw me working in Australia, Hong Kong and China (obviously the big mixed bag of cultures and languages came in handy)."
