A 45-year-old woman at the Concord Circuit house when police arrived has been taken into custody.

The Vietnamese grandparents were caring for their grandson, something they did each Tuesday as his parents worked.

The grandfather is recovering in Royal Melbourne Hospital with minor physical injuries.

According to police, the Chinese woman had arrived at the home on Tuesday morning, followed by an "altercation" late in the day when the grandmother arrived home at 5pm.

"They've known each other for three years," he said.

"The nature of that relationship is yet to be uncovered."

Nine News reports the boy's parents were "inconsolable and devastated".

Nine reports the boy is one of four grandchildren, but the only one at the Albanvale home.
