Good news for great-grandparents targeted by criminals

ALCOHOL soaked car seats could be the least of great grandparents Brian and Vielda Hayward's worries after their stolen car was found in Rockhampton.

They were visiting their granddaughter in Blackwater when their car was stolen from outside the house while they slept on Monday night.

Three nights later, they received a call from police to say the Toyota Aurion had been found outside a pub in Rockhampton after the driver failed to pay for fuel at the service station.

Their granddaughter Sheree Hayward said they are yet to find out how much damage was done to the car.

"Grandad is still pretty annoyed because he hasn't got his car back," Ms Hayward said.

External damage to the car includes a large dent to the front and scratches to the boot but the mechanical condition is yet to be confirmed.

"It's still being assessed but who knows how fast they drove and the damage caused," she said.

"Police found a rum bottle in the back seat.

"They're hoping to get a new one because you just don't know what they've actually done to the car."

The retirees hired a car to return to Southbrook, near Toowoomba, but they hope to get a replacement car soon.

"I don't think they will come back (to Blackwater) anytime," Ms Hayward said.

Five youth were involved in the car theft, according to Ms Hayward and she wants them to face the consequences.

Police confirmed a 15-year-old boy was arrested and charged with unlawful use of a motor vehicle but Ms Hayward said this wasn't good enough.

"I think they should all be responsible not just one," she said.

Ms Hayward maintains there is an issue with crime in Blackwater.
