Town criers to shout it out

“HEAR ye, hear ye.”

The Clarence Valley's town crier is expecting a friendly but competitive field in the upcoming national championships in Maryborough, Qld, next month.

Trevor Green has been a proud member of the Ancient and Honourable Guild of Australian Town Criers for less than a year and heads off to the national titles as a ‘clean skin'. Green he may be, but he is keen to bring home a prize.

Town criers are judged against various criteria including clarity, presentation, stance and how they get on with the public. “I have had to prepare two cries, and I am practising out in the bush. A cry has to be from the gut and projected, it is not a scream or a yell,” he said.

Mr Green replaced Roy Bowling who was the local town crier for 25 years.

“I used to watch Mr Bowling at the Jacaranda Festival, and think I would like to do that job. When the opportunity arose I took it,” he said.

The position isn't paid and he had to buy his own bells and outfit, but Mr Green took on the role to help maintain the traditions of the area.

“Sometimes I wake up and think ‘what am I doing?', but it is not about me, I do it for the valley,” he said.

Mr Green has also had to study the history of the Clarence Valley and town criers in general. “People are always asking me questions, you become a bit of a guide,” he said.

The nationals are being held July 1 and 2, during the Mary Poppins Festival.
