Gunzler, Tougher set to lock horns
THE City of Rockhampton Championship is becoming a battle between Ricky Gunzler and Trevor Tougher with the pair looking ahead to doing battle again next year as they are locked at five wins apiece.
“It was good to catch him, I would not have liked him making it six wins and me four,” Tougher said.
Gunzler, who plays out of Logan's Mount Warren Park Golf Club, came into the weekend's tournament having had back-to-back wins in the event.
Again the pair were at the top of the leader board but this year Yeppoon's Trevor Tougher was the man to take the trophy.
“I played alright for an old feller,” Tougher said.
The champion admitted the long Rockhampton Golf Course suits his game.
“I always find the Rocky course a bit to my liking,” he said.
“It played really well considering what it has been through (floods), the greens had good speed.”
After firing a 74 on Saturday Tougher felt someone from the chasing pack would need to fire a sub-par round to beat him.
As it turned out Tougher made it a little harder with a second round 72 (par) but still he was wary of what might happen with Gunzler and Michael Neaton, who were the main challengers.
“Michael is thereabouts all the time, he is a good player and he hits the ball pretty straight,” Tougher said.
Tougher is pretty relaxed about future tournaments saying he plans to take part in the Yeppoon Open in a couple of weeks time and also compete at Emu Park.
