Hairdresser by day, Karma by night

SHE'S A hair stylist by day but for Carmen Harris, it's the weekends when she's the most creative.

The local hairdresser is one of Rockhampton's biggest cosplay fans who'll be at this weekend's first ever CapriCon steampunk and pop culture convention.

Carmen, 22, has always loved playing dress ups which is how she become interested in cosplay.

"Cosplay is the art of dressing up as fictional characters, whether it be cartoons, comics, movies, famous people, pretty much anything really," she said.

"I've always been interested in cosplay and about a year ago I found out through Facebook that there was a convention in Mackay. My sister and I made my costume and I went along and have been hooked ever since."

For Carmen, known as Karma in the cosplay world, her cosplay character is her second identity.

"My whole life I've loved dressing up, at my birthday parties, at other events, so I've just taken it to the next level," she said.

"I just feel really good about myself when I'm in character and I see how great a costume looks after all of the effort I've put into it. It's just so much fun to go along to cosplay events as Karma and then go home and wake up the next day as Carmen, I love it.

"Cosplay is still pretty small here in Rockhampton but I think there's a lot of closest cosplays but it's definitely growing. I think because there are a few people out there who want to get involved but don't know what their friends will think or might think that cosplay is kind of taboo.

"I hosted Rocky's first cosplay meet a few months ago and had a few people approach me wanting to know more about it and asked if they could come along so there's a lot of interest in it I think. That's the good thing about these events, people can come along, see how it all works, ask questions at the cosplay panel, it's fun for all ages."
