COLUMN: Healthy habits keep you young

YOU think I'm 31?

Well excuse me. Just rob me of two years of my life. It's not like I needed them.

All jokes aside, I was quite shocked to take the Queensland Government's Health and Fitness Age Challenge calculator to discover that my "health age" was rated as two years older than I actually am.

I took the quiz out of curiosity (my mum was skiting that her score was younger than her real age) but it has turned out to be a bit of a wake-up call for me.

I've always considered myself to be reasonably healthy but when I think about it, I don't actually put that much effort into my wellbeing.

The quiz - which questions you on body shape, lifestyle, and eating and drinking habits - shows I spend too much time sitting down. There was also a mention of too much wine... but I think they must have surely mixed up my results with someone else's.

I did get the thumbs up for not smoking and for eating plenty of fruit and vegies.

Now that I've been sufficiently shamed into seeking to improve my health habits, I've also downloaded the age challenge app, which allows you to track your progress. It comes complete with your own virtual motivator to keep you inspired.

I chose Arnold McFittyFit, who now sends me high-fives and encouraging advice.

Isn't technology great these days? I've got all my friends right at my fingertips in my phone.

There's Siri, my personal assistant ready to answer all my questions. And now there's Arnold, explaining that he's there to support me, not criticise, even when I'm tempted to not do my day's quota of exercise.

No doubt with his help I'll be back to my sprightly 29-year-old self in no time.
