Heart attack warning as heatwave hits CQ

CENTRAL Queenslanders with heart conditions are being urged to take extra care as sizzling temperatures sweep across the region today.

Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Felim Hanniffy said the mercury would hit the high 30s to low 40s in the Central Highlands and Coalfields today.

"Mackay today will go for a top of 32C which is 2C above average for this time of year," he said.

"Further inland it will be anywhere from 5C to 7C above average."

A severe fire danger rating has been issued for the Central Highlands and Coalfields today.

Mr Hanniffy expected conditions to cool down by the weekend.

People with heart disease taking medication for blood pressure or excess fluid, such as diuretics, are at higher risk of falling ill or having a heart attack during a heatwave.

Heart Foundation Queensland heart health manager Anna Lewis said residents should be prepared as temperatures soar.

"Sweating leads to dehydration, which reduces the volume of blood. This makes the heart pump harder to circulate the reduce amount of blood around the body," she said.

"For people with heart disease and those who are at high risk of a heart attack, these changes can overwhelm the heart and could even result in a heart attack.

"It's really important people know the warning signs of a heart attack, and act quickly to call triple-0 if they need help."
