Heatwave to sweep across states
A number of states across Australia will endure temperatures up to 15C above average this week, as higher temperatures sweep across from Perth to Hobart.
Low-to-severe intensity heatwave conditions are predicted across parts of Western Australia, South Australia, Victoria and Tasmania over the next week.
Senior forecaster Sarah Scully said there were two weather systems that were contributing to the heatwave conditions and maximum temperatures could reach between 5C and 15C above the February average.
She said parts of south east WA and southern SA, extending into western Victoria and western Tasmania would see the greatest temperatures anomalies.
Ms Scully said there was a near stationary high-pressure system in the Tasman Sea which was drifting warm, northerly winds across southeastern Australia and blocking any cold fronts from entering.
In addition, a low pressure trough was building over the west of WA, dragging down hot northerly winds over western and central parts of SA and into southeastern WA.
"It's typical for the summer months to have warmer than average temperatures (and on) consecutive days," Ms Scully said.
"We haven't seen that many heatwave events this summer over eastern and southern Australia but there have been heatwave events over in WA and that's very typical with the La Niña weather pattern that's occurring."
According to BoM, the hottest temperature predicted in SA over the coming week is 43C in Nullarbor on Thursday. The average maximum temperature is only 28C, which is a 15C difference.
In Adelaide on Thursday it is forecast to reach 37C which is 8C above the city's February average.
In WA, Warburton will be the warmest place reaching 39C on Thursday, which be 2.4C above its 36.6C average.
Perth averages 31.6C in February and is predicted to have 33C on Sunday.
Horsham in Victoria will experience a 6.7C increase compared to its average 30.3C temperatures on Friday, peaking at 37C.
Hobart in Tasmania will reach 31C on Friday which is 10C hotter than its average temperature of 21.7C in February.
