He'll be back after blackout

FORMER local horse trainer Garnett Taylor left Rocky three years ago to base his operations on the Gold Coast. He trains on track with between 28 to 30 horses under his eye.

But he didn't really leave Rockhampton. Taylor knows the road to Rocky very well and he is such a frequent visitor to Callaghan Park it's almost his second home. He was here again yesterday.

"I have a lot of owners, still have a lot of clients here," Taylor explained.

"I take my horses where they've got the best chance and Rocky is perfect. I come up for the day, there is good money on offer. Rocky is still a big part of what I do.

There were five Taylor-trained horses running at the Rockhampton Jockey Club race day yesterday, including Race 2 favourite Bold Flight. Finishing fifth, Taylor wasn't fussed.

"I'm pretty pleased with that, it wasn't a bad run," Taylor said nonchalantly

He also bought up first racer, Dragon Town in Race 1. Again, the ever-affable Taylor was not bothered too much by the outcome.

"He finished mid field in his first race," Taylor said. Actually it was third last, but let's not quibble.

"He's a nice horse, he'll run a mile or better."

It wasn't happy hunting for the laid-back Taylor; It's A Thrilla finished fifth in the third and Sharpaz was well beaten in the fifth. In the last, Curley Grey finished fourth.

"No good mate, it's been a bad day, had a blackout," Taylor said of his recent raid north.

It was a rare show of frustration. But it didn't last long.

"But no worries, we'll be back in the next week or two."

The easy-going Taylor had returned.

Soon to make the trip up to Rocky with Taylor is one of his best prospects, Ms Ba Bella. The rising six-year-old mare has: "won a few in town. One at Eagle Farm, two at Doomben. She's heading up for the Rocky Cup".

And so is Garnett Taylor, you can bet on it.
