Here’s Johnny! Star’s secret trip to Bundy

PIRATES of the Caribbean star Johnny Depp has been spotted looking for turtles at Mon Repos as he recovers from an injured hand.

Onlookers were shocked on Sunday to spot the actor near the Turtle Trail but he was quickly shuttled away in a black car before any photographs could be taken.

Theresa Walker, 31, said she could not believe her eyes when she saw him.

"I tried to get my phone out to take a clear photo but he was too quick," she said.

"He's so hot."

Last month, the 51-year-old actor caused a halt in production of the fifth Pirates of the Caribbean movie Dead Men Tell No Tales, being filmed on the Gold Coast, when he flew to the US for surgery on his hand.

However, Depp's publicist would not comment on how Depp hurt his hand, nor when he might return.

Bundaberg actor Brandon Burnett, working as an extra on the film, confirmed Depp was in Bundy staying at his friend's house but was trying to keep the visit low key.

"Mate, he doesn't want the media attention right now," he said.

"He just wants to rest up and get back to work soon."

The NewsMail understands that Depp became enamoured with the city when he found out a Bundaberg boat, The Rainbow Gypsy, had been transformed into the Black Pearl, Depp's character Jack Sparrow's preferred mode of transport.

Burnett said Depp's minders asked if any crew or actors were from the region, which was how he became friendly with the Oscar-nominated actor.

"We discussed Marxism and the works of Spinoza before talking about Bundy," Burnett said.

"I told him about the turtles, Bundy Rum, and the nightlife and he was really keen to visit."

Burnett said Depp had become fascinated with turtles in recent months and was keen to visit Mon Repos.

"When he dies, he wants to come back as a turtle because of their lifespan and ability to survive," he said.

"Turtles have a hard-shell exterior but a soft underside and that's Johnny in a nutshell - or a turtle shell, as it were."

Burnett said his favourite film of Depp's remained Edward Scissorhands.

"Depp told me he actually had scissors sewn on to his hands throughout the entire shoot," he said.

"I thought 'how the hell did he go to the toilet' and that's when Depp laughed and said he was having me on.

"It wasn't April Fool's Day or anything - that's just Johnny's way of having a laugh."
