Hero races to help screaming woman in burning house

WHEN Jeff Wheatley saw smoke billowing out of a Bolsover St home and heard a woman screaming for help yesterday afternoon, he raced to help.

It was a scene of panic in Depot Hill, Rockhampton, as the kitchen of 293 Bolsover St went up in flames.

Mr Wheatley, an employee at the Easy Lift business next door to the home, said he heard shouts and saw smoke coming from the house.

"I got to the back door and there was a bloke there pointing a hose through a broken window and a lady screaming hysterically 'are my kids in there' so I got down and went and had a crawl around the house to see if I could find any kids or anyone in there, bar the dog at the back door," Mr Wheatley said.

"I sort of got her (the woman living in the house) out of the way to save her because she was trying to get in at the same time and once I worked out the house was empty, the fire brigade had arrived by that stage and everything was fine."

Mr Wheatley praised the fire brigade officers and said they were quick to arrive.

"It looks like the kitchen went up in fire somehow, it definitely started in the kitchen and spread, the smoke was pretty heavy right through the bedrooms but that was about it, the fire brigade was very quick," he said.

However the drama wasn't over.

Running wildly across Bolsover St though traffic, screaming for his mum, a young man who was a resident of the house was narrowly missed by an oncoming car before being restrained by police officers, who quickly reunited him with his mother.

Rockhampton Police Acting Senior Sergeant Wayne Mason said initial investigations by QFRS and by Police revealed that something was left on the stove and the fire had gone through the wall, and slightly up into the roof.

"There is no major structural damage and everyone was safe, there are no injuries and no major damage to the house, a woman who rents the house was in the house at the time," Sgt Mason said.
