Hi-tech State Library gets American Presidential citation

THE State Library of Queensland has achieved an Australian first after its world-class facility The Edge was awarded an American Presidential citation for its innovative online services.

The American Library Association Presidential Citation is awarded to only four institutions in the world annually.

Arts Minister Ian Walker, talking exclusively to APN Newsdesk, said on Wednesday the citation showed the state was setting the standard for the rest of the world in new ways to deliver library services, especially for those who are living in regional towns and cities across the state.

"Queensland families are the big winners from the State Library blazing the way in online service delivery," Mr Walker said.

"State Library services, no matter where you live, are one push of the button away.

"The citation recognises the work of The Edge, which has a unique approach that provides interactive and collaborative learning experiences rather than simply offering a traditional collection of material."

State Librarian Janette Wright said The Edge had provided an offering that is unique in Australian libraries and around the world.

"It is outstanding to have The Edge recognised on a world stage, reinforcing that our library is helping to lead the way in the evolution of innovative library services and knowledge creation," she said.

"The Edge provides free access to training and specialist facilities such as a recording studio, media labs for fabrication, software for graphic design, electronics, programming, sound and video editing.
