Woman, 30, fined for failing to return hire vehicle

A 30-YEAR-old Urangan woman who failed to return a hire vehicle was given a three-month suspended jail sentence and ordered to pay $772.30 in restitution.

Kelly Sheree Williams pleaded guilty in the Hervey Bay Magistrates Court on Monday to fraud.

Representatives from Thrifty Car Rentals located and repossessed the vehicle after Williams took it for 12 days longer than the agreed term of hire.

A Hervey Bay police prosecutions representative said Williams had originally hired the car for a single day.

"When the vehicle wasn't returned on time, Thrifty contacted Miss Williams and they said she would be allowed to keep the vehicle until April 20," she said.

"But she again failed to return the vehicle.

"On May 7, they located the vehicle and it was repossessed."

At the time the hire vehicle was retrieved, payment for 12 days hire was still outstanding on the lease.

Magistrate Graeme Tatnell convicted Williams and ordered her suspended sentence be current for 18 months.

The $772.30 restitution to be repaid to Thrifty Car Hire was for the 12 additional days of car hire.
