Hirsute society grows in Rockhampton with over 100 members
FOR Rockhampton's Joe Coll a beard is more than just facial hair. It's a fashion statement, a comforter, a symbol of masculinity, a protest to the razor, even a soup strainer.
"Growing a beard ... it's like a journey," Joe said.
To share that journey with other facial hair enthusiasts, Joe and his wife recently founded the North Rockhampton Beard and Moustache Society.
After just one week of existence the Facebook group already has more than 100 members.
"It's just frivolous and a bit of fun," he said.
The Morning Bulletin sat down with Joe last week to brush up on our whisker knowledge in preparation for the society's inaugural Beard and Moustache Championship, which will be held this Australia Day at O'Dowd's Irish Pub.
Joe said categories would include best full beard, moustache, side burns, partial beard and even fake facial hair for the ladies - or those without the natural ability to grow.
"It's for everyone," he said. "Beards will be judged on density, length, colour and fullness but there will also be an element of how well it suits the person."
A gold coin donation is required for registration, which will kick off at 2pm.
Joe said all proceeds would go to a men's mental health charity.
