Major overhaul to start at historical site

CLERMONT Historical Centre is set to take a short break to focus on conservation works.

The centre will close from Saturday December 24 and reopen from Wednesday, March 1, 2017.

Mayor Anne Baker said the closure is to carry out preservation works on Clermont's precious historical items and prepare upcoming exhibitions.

"The Clermont Historical Centre is home to a wide variety of local artefacts.

"From mining and agricultural machinery, to century old postcards and photographs, there's a lot to look after.

"Restoration will continue on the original Aveling Porter Steam Traction Engine that moved Clermont after the 1916 flood.

"The steam engine will be a feature of a community day planned at the centre for 2017.

"The Masonic Lodge is also undergoing restoration. The original wooden floors will be sanded and sealed during the closure.

"Staff will progress the digitisation of paper based collections so they are there for future generations to enjoy.

"Capital projects will also be undertaken, including improving disabled access."

Upon reopening patrons can continue to enjoy the 'Flood of Memories' Exhibition.

The exhibition features local stories, photography and memorabilia from the 1916 Clermont flood.

The centre will be open for the start of the December school holidays.

Visitors are welcome Wednesday to Saturday 9am to 3pm up until the closure on Christmas Eve.
