Holy Toledo! Team scrapes home in nail-biting finish
TOLEDO Division 1 men made it two buzzer beaters in as many weeks to sink the Ripperteam Bears 86-85 in Rockhampton Basketball summer season action on Tuesday.
Down four points with 13 seconds to go, Brad Williamson drained a big three-pointer to cut the margin to one and, with six seconds left, Luke Pickard intercepted an inbound pass and broke away for the game-winning lay-up.
It was a crushing defeat for Ripperteam, who led for 90% of the match.
In a high-scoring affair, Ripperteam took the early ascendency, jumping out to a 26-17 lead at the first break.
Toledo would then spend the rest of the match clawing back the lead, only capturing it in the final seconds. Sharp shooter Jonothan Voltz was on fire for Ripperteam, finishing with 49 points, including nine three-pointers. Brad Williamson finished with 42 for Toledo with Wes Hawke also contributing 23 points.
In the other Division 1 game, Frenchville Stingers took advantage of Mitch Philp's absence, taking care of Frenchville White 89-46.
Stingers have sent a message to the rest of the competition, starting the season in dominant form with two wins to top the ladder.
Leon and Damon Christensen managed the bulk of the scoring for the Frenchville Stingers side with 32 and 24 respectively. Simon Weigh led the way for his team, consistently hitting the mid-range jump shot for 19 points.
The competition heats up next week with the Frenchville Stingers taking on the Toledo Spurs in a top of the table match-up.
