Sex assaults on six backpackers

A MAN allegedly broke into three backpacker hostels and sexually assaulted up to six women overnight.

Police said a man unlawfully entered the Grand Hotel, Northside Backpackers and the Workers and Divers Hostel in the early hours of yesterday morning and groped the women while they slept.

Bundaberg Police Criminal Investigation Branch Detective Senior Sergeant Joe Hildred said the man also allegedly tried to break into Pinky's House and the Cell Block Hostel, but was unsuccessful.

From there, it is believed he broke into Northside Backpackers about 1am, where he sexually assaulted a 22-year-old French female backpacker.

Det Snr Sgt Hildred said the man then allegedly entered another room, where he groped another female backpacker.

The intruder is believed to have gained access to another room where a 20-year-old Canadian woman was sexually assaulted.

“He has allegedly gone into another room and stolen a backpack, passport and personal papers belonging to a German male,” Det Snr Sgt Hildred said.

“He has also stolen a quantity of foodstuffs, milk from the fridge and stolen some thongs.”

It is believed the teenager then entered another room and sexually assaulted a 20-year-old woman.

After leaving the premises, the man is accused of breaking into the Workers and Divers Hostel, where it is alleged he touched the buttocks of an Irish woman.

He then moved on to the Grand Hotel, where he allegedly sexually assaulted a Belgian backpacker and stole her mobile phone.

Police arrested a 19-year-old man just before 2am yesterday and he later appeared in Bundaberg Magistrates Court, where barrister Nick Larter requested the matter be adjourned to 2pm today.

The man has been charged with four counts of sexual assault, two counts of trespassing, five counts of entering a dwelling with intent at night, two charges of entering a dwelling and committing an indictable offence, one charge of entering a premises and committing an indictable offence and one charge of common assault.

He has been remanded in custody overnight.
