COMMENTING on another person's weight is dangerous. But medical experts agree that to say nothing is more cruel.

Because more than 61 per cent of Australian adults are overweight or obese, more people are facing the dilemma of how to say the other f word than ever before.

Associate professor Tim Gill from the Boden Institute at the University of Sydney said most Australians will either be overweight, or know someone who is.

"What we know from analysis is that most adults do not see a problem in themselves but will see it in somebody else," Gill said.

"You have got to be very careful in how you approach a friend or family member about this, because they could either ignore you or deny they have a problem."
