How young heroes fought to save mate from shark

THE three friends who tried to save their mate, Zach Young, 19, after a shark attack near Coffs Harbour on Saturday have described the ordeal as "the scariest thing they've ever been through".

"We just had to get him in, it was his last chance. If we didn't get him in he was at the bottom of the ocean," Lindsy Isaac said

Lindsy, 14, had been filming Zach, Kurt Gillan, 18, and 15-year-old Shayden Schrader when tragedy struck.

A memorial service was held at Port Macquarie yesterday for Zach who was surfing with his friends when he was bitten on the legs by what is believed to be a tiger shark.

"His mates struggled with the shark for a short time," Inspector Joanne Reid said.

"Then the shark has let go and friends then courageously managed to get him to shore."

End the myth of the harmless shark, prominent surfer says

Zach's father, Kevin Young, paid tribute to the bravery of the trio, who joined hundreds at a memorial service in Zach's home town of Port Macquarie on Sunday morning.

"These three young guys didn't run," Mr Young said before hugging them.

"I want you to know these three guys."

When ambulance paramedics arrived at Campbell's Beach, north of Coffs Harbour, they found the three friends trying to revive Zach.

"He suffered a traumatic cardiac arrest as a result of his injuries," an Ambulance Service spokeswoman said.

Water police, Marine Rescue and Surf Life Saving volunteers yesterday searched for the shark.

Beaches from Sawtell to Woolgoolga were closed following the attack.

The tragic death is the second shark fatality in a week.

Chris Boyd, 35, was surfing alone at Gracetown, south of Perth, last Saturday when he was killed by what is believed to have been a Great White.
