Childhood friend recalls practicing golf with Jason Day
ROCKHAMPTON Golf Club's Jeffery Hoy took a trip down memory lane yesterday, to the days he and his "brother" Jason Day were clubbing golf balls around.
Former Rockhampton junior Jason Day won the US PGA yesterday - his first major.
The very close childhood mates lived next to each other when Jason, this year's PGA Championship winner, was living in Park Avenue's Wackford St.
Almost everyday, for the four or so years Jason was living next to Jeffrey's house, they would brush up on their golf skills after school.
At the time, Jason's handicap was a one. Jeffrey's was about a five.
Jeffrey said he always remembered Jason as a hardworking and very-well mannered teen.
"That's what put him apart from the other kids who played golf: he just kept practicing and practicing... and it has paid off," Jeffrey said.
In fact, when the PGA champion was 11, he shot 10 under par at a golf tournament in Mt Morgan.
He remembered the post-high school days when he and Jason celebrated the latter's 18th birthday in Brisbane.
Although he hadn't spoken to Jason in several years, he said he hoped to catch up with him in the coming months.
Jason was a product of Emmaus College.
