Huge crowds flock to opening of Rockhampton Show

AMY Birch finds it far more exciting stroking her young bull's chin than buying a ticket for a thrill ride.

She has been this way for the past five years and feels no different about what tickles her fancy at the Rockhampton Show.

The high-school student said she wouldn't trade her cowboy hat for a show ride ticket any day.

Amy, 15, is a Monto country girl who yesterday told The Morning Bulletin her role at yesterday's show, as part of judging, was to examine a beast's head to determine if the cow or bull respectively was feminine or masculine enough.

She was yesterday part of the Monto cattle team taking part in judging and beast competitions this year.

"I may go off at night to buy food from the hot dog stands but the rides and the show bags aren't the reason we come here," she said.

Amy was yesterday part of a team of 12 teenagers from Monto.

Her father entered cattle in this year's show competitions. They come from a rural property called Rosevale.

Meanwhile, thousands yesterday rushed into the Rockhampton Showgrounds to soak up the atmosphere as festivities got underway.

Last night show-goers flocked to the venue for Rooftop Express and the 8.30pm fireworks.

Today the show-action continues with showjumping, the lumberjack show and the Trackskill V8 Ute challenge.

For more of the show action see next week's Morning Bulletin edition.
