New hendra virus vaccine for humans will start clinical trials this month

A NEW vaccine against Hendra virus in humans will be tested on volunteers as part of a clinical trial announced today.

Eleven people have already received the vaccine as they were at high risk of developing the virus after being exposed.

Princess Alexandra Hospital Hendra virus specialist Geoffrey Playford said none of these people, who had been given the vaccine on "compassionate grounds", had experienced serious side effects.

But he said it needed to be further tested.

Starting later this month, the vaccine will be tested on 40 health people aged between 18 and 50 years old.

The vaccine is designed to give to people who have come into close contact with an infected and before the virus had a chance to develop in the human body,

But further tests will be conducted to determine if the vaccine would also work on people who already have the virus.

Since 1994, 90 horses have died from the Hendra virus.

All of the seven humans in Australia who have caught the virus were in Queensland.

Four of these people have died.
