TOO MANY TO HANDLE: Askari Uma continues to have "spider explosions” in her Rock Valley home three to four times a year, despite taking preventative measures.

Hundreds of spiders 'explode' above woman's bed

FOR some people it's the stuff of nightmares, recurring spider "explosions" above beds, emerging from under the floors and in bathrooms.

For Rock Valley resident Askari Uma these "spider explosions" occur several times a year.

Ms Uma has been living in her house for seven years and said it happens around three to four times each year.

"It does my head in... an explosion of hundreds of baby spiders in my bedroom, right above my bed!," Ms Uma said.

"I figured out where they were coming from last year, so I sealed it all up, I had a good six months of no explosions. I thought I'd won but apparently not.

"(Tuesday night) they were coming out from under my carpet.

"I smooshed and sprayed them all, then left the room to put my bedding in the wash, only to see a few hundred more.

"I got rid of them, and now (last night) the same thing!.

"I usually only see them when I'm ready for bed."

She said the baby spiders resemble huntsmans but the hatching was more an "explosion" than she had seen online.

Asking if anyone else had this problem in a Facebook group, others have said they had also dealt with "explosions".

Taylah-Tay Darlington: "I'd believe it! We have the damn things explode into our bathroom last week... they were everywhere."

If you're not into pest control, there are some home remedies to keep the bugs at bay.

Nuts: A popular old wives tale says that chestnuts can be placed around the home to deter spiders. Some claim they hate the smell, others claim they keel over in the presence of a walnut, alhough there is no real evidence.

Get rid of other insects: Spiders will follow insects attracted to lights so if windows are left open with the lights on, expect spiders to be following. Clean home of spider webs and egg sacks to deter them returning.

Essential Oils and Vinegar Sprays: Eucalyptus, tea-tree or peppermint oils might keep the spiders out. Spray a diluted mixture around windows and doors. A similar option is vinegar.

These tips are better suited for homes with the normal influx of spiders. In the event of a serious spider problem or if all else fails, consider contacting an exterminator.
