Truck spill ties up highway

TRAFFIC on the Bruce Highway 15 kilometres south of Marlborough was disrupted for hours this morning after a truck carrying dangerous goods ran off the road and overturned shortly before 6am.

One lane of the highway was blocked as rescue services conducted a delicate operation to make the vehicle safe.

Marlborough SES set up traffic control as fire officers worked to get the truck on to its wheels, finally succeeding at about 1015am.

Delays were compounded by the lack of a tow truck and the requirement for a replacement vehicle into which the load the goods which were described as a variety of dangerous items.

The driver sustained only minor facial injuries and did not require hospital treatment.
