Illegal immigrant accused of rape after attack in CBD

AS an alleged rapist was ordered to stand during his court appearance in Rockhampton yesterday he sat, staring at the magistrate.

But he wasn't being purposely rude.

The accused is an illegal immigrant, believed to be from Burma, who can barely speak a word of English.

The 27-year-old appeared in the Magistrates Court yesterday on one charge of rape after a woman was attacked in Rockhampton early Saturday morning.

The accused looked dishevelled in a white singlet and long brown sarong.

He was barefoot after being brought up from the watch house.

It is alleged around 3am on Saturday he was parked near the Subway taxi rank in the CBD, and an intoxicated woman hopped in believing his car was a taxi.

He then drove her to Reaney St, parked under the bridge and allegedly raped her.

Police said he was with her for about half an hour before letting the woman leave.

About 12 hours later, around 3.15pm on Saturday, police arrested him at a Koongal residence.

He refused to be interviewed by police, and it is unknown how he came to be in Australia.

Rockhampton Criminal Investigation Bureau Detective Sergeant Nick Williams said the man would stay in the country until he faced court in relation to the attack.

If he is found guilty he will serve his sentence in an Australian jail, and if found not guilty he will be deported.

The case was adjourned until April 16.

He was remanded in custody and did not apply for bail.
