WHAT should you do when traffic's backed up and you're desperate to get to the bottle shop?

You probably shouldn't follow the example set by one driver, who got around other cars by driving over the footpath.

The impatient driver was caught on camera Tuesday afternoon by Rockhampton driving instructor Leyland Barnett, who was waiting at the lights on the intersection of Dean and High Sts when he saw the incident unfold.

Unfortunately, Leyland said bad decisions behind the wheel weren't rare in Rockhampton.

He also captured footage of a ute driving on the wrong side of the road over a hill crest.

Leyland said Rockhampton drivers were guilty of ignoring double lines, failing to indicate, texting and talking while driving and "playing Russian roulette" at roundabouts.

"People just don't seem to care," Leyland said.

"They seem to think they're in their own little environment."

But he said more education wouldn't necessarily make the situation any better, with some people ignoring driver training.

Leyland said the use of mobile phones while driving was particularly concerning, with the performance of drivers almost the same as those driving with alcohol or drugs in their system.

"I believe texting on phones needs to be the same fine as a drink or drug driver."

Earlier this month, tougher penalties for motorists repeatedly caught texting or using phones while driving were recommended as part of a Palaszczuk government forum on road safety.

It is proposed repeat offenders could face double demerit points, similar to those imposed on people who don't wear a seatbelt, motorcycle helmet or speed excessively.
