In-form Queensland striker ready to sparkle for Wanderers
AARON Thompson is set to strike as Wanderers ramp up their A1 men's premiership campaign.
The 23-year-old was riding high heading into tomorrow's local fixtures after gaining selection in the 2014 open men's Queensland hockey team to contest the Australian Country Championships in Toowoomba in August.
Thompson's selection came after a strong performance while representing Central Mud Turtles in the 2014 Poligras Super League last weekend.
The humble striker has plenty of experience in the Queensland strip but said he banked on a bit of luck to gain selection. "This is my third time playing in the Queensland open team," Thompson said. "I was picked from the Super League this year ... there were a lot of good teams.
"I wear my lucky shirt and lucky pants before every game. My lucky shirt I stole it off a mate. It has a picture of Jimmy Hendrix and the pants are my Wanderers pants that have big holes in them. I've had them for about four years."
Thompson is looking forward to getting back out on the field tomorrow when his Wanderers team lines up against Gladstone Sparks in the Central Queensland hockey competition. "We're playing Sparks and it should be a really tough game," he said. "I'm hoping to score some more goals."
The 12-year veteran said while Wanderers were on track to claim local premierships this season, anything could happen.
"It will be harder this year. The competition is a bit tougher and our team is getting older while everyone else is getting younger players through," Thompson said. "Souths and Frenchville are really good this year. Frenchville had a few players out at the start of the season but they have a really good side."
