Injured Jet grounded for rest of season

NEWCASTLE Jets have suffered a big blow ahead of tomorrow night's clash against the Melbourne Victory, with striker Labinot Haliti ruled out for the season with an ACL injury.

Recruited from the Western Sydney Wanderers, Haliti (pictured) suffered the injury early in last weekend's 1-0 loss to Sydney FC.

He received an initial scan on Monday before getting a second opinion on Tuesday.

Unfortunately for the 29-year-old, the results came back the same.

"We are very disappointed for Labi. He will be out until the end of the season," Jets coach Scott Miller said.

"Structurally when it was tested on the pitch it suggested it wasn't too severe, but on reflection the specialists have suggested that he will need an ACL reconstruction.

"Labi is bitterly disappointed but he recognises that he will be back for pre-season and he is willing to work hard."

Miller said it was important to still have Haliti around his group as this season goes on without him.

"He is a great character to have around and he is still going to play a part with this season," Miller said.

"Not only is he (Haliti) a great person, but he adds the extra quality to us as well."

Haliti - who played for the Jets from 2005 to 2007 - admitted he was bitterly disappointed to be ruled out for the rest of the summer, after playing just two games back in Newcastle.

"The team and the fans have given me everything," he said.

"So the things that bother me are not being able to help the team, and not being able to play for the fans."
