Inspiration on a wheelchair

"DISABLED" is not a word you'll find in world hand cyclist Andreas Dagelet's vocabulary.

After breaking his back in 1995, Andreas decided it would not affect his zest for life.

The 39-year-old went on to complete a 16,000km ride around Australia on a custom-built hand-driven cycle.

The adventurous athlete has travelled to more than 49 countries and skydived, scuba dived and flown a plane - many times in his wheelchair.

Andreas was at Rockhampton Police Citizen Youth Club last week to launch Sports Ability, an Australian Government initiative.

Sports Ability is an inclusive games program developed by the Australian Sports Commission to encourage people with a disability to get involved and participate in sport and active recreation.

Its two main aims are to provide people delivering sport or physical activities with more ways of including people with a disability; and for people with and without a disability to interact in a sporting environment.

Andreas said it was a great initiative.

"I reckon it's great that they've got these programs that are not exclusive, but inclusive," he said.
