IS calls for attacks

ISLAMIC State has used an audio message to urge its Australian followers to carry out attacks during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

The message - which also calls on supporters to launch attacks in the US, Europe, Iraq, Syria, Iran, Russia and the Philippines - was released on Monday through encrypted chatting app Telegram and attributed to IS spokesman Abi al-Hassan al-Muhajer.

"To the brethren of faith and belief in Europe, America, Russia, Australia, and others,” he said in Arabic, according to one translation.

"Your brothers in your land have done well so take them as role models and do as they have done.”

IS has called for attacks during Ramadan in the past.

Ramadan began on the evening of May 26 and will end on June 24.
