Islamic State videos: Why do we air them?

A VIDEO featuring a 17-year-old Australian threatening our prime minister begs the question: Is it time to start ignoring the Islamic State's propaganda machine?

In the clip, Abdullah Elmir  specifically mentions Prime Minister Tony Abbott and US president Barack Obama, and talks about beheadings.

He vowed IS would not stop fighting until the black flag was flying over Buckingham Palace and the White House.

Muslim groups in Australia have condemned the video and are worried it will increase community tensions.

They fear all Muslims will be tarred with the same brush.

Even the boy's family have reportedly distanced themselves from him, describing him as an 'idiot' who had been brainwashed.

He apparently vanished from his Bankstown home earlier this year after telling his family he was going fishing.

The Greens are concerned that by joining the US in the war on terror, Australia will become targets for crazed extremists on home soil.

For its part, the Coalition was keen to use the 'chilling video' as a "reminder of the threat we face by radicalised young people", the ABC reported.

Seeing the video on TV last night, I could not help to think to myself, why are we giving these people air-time?

It's exactly what they want.

Crossbench senator David Leyonhjelm summed it up best when he said:  "What it demonstrates is that these people we're dealing with are dickheads - absolute dickheads.''
