It's a once-in-a-century birthday

TODAY, on the 11th day of the 11th month of 2011, Brooke Short and Bec Barltey will turn 11 years old.

And it's not the only thing these girls have in common.

Both were born by emergency caesarean and both are planning big birthday celebrations this weekend.

Not so surprisingly, both girls say 11 is their favourite number.

"I think it's pretty special to have your 11th birthday on 11/11/11," said Brooke, of Lennox Head.

"It wouldn't happen very often, so I reckon it's good luck."

Bec, of Ballina, agreed with her new-found birthday friend.

She was even born in the 11th hour, so her celebration is extra special.

"I'm having a party; my Mum said that I could," she said.

Brooke will celebrate at the ten-pin bowling alley.

She had wanted a birthday party for several years, but was convinced to hold off until "the special one".

"We've known for a long time that I was going to be 11 on 11/11/11 - we figured it out," she said.

"I think it's pretty good."

What's special about 11/11/11?

WHAT does the date 11/11/11 mean to you?

For most people it is Remembrance Day, when we pause at 11am to think about those who have fought wars and battles for our freedom.

But this palindromic date occurs only once a century, and there are plenty of thoughts on its significance.

Some believe the world will end or that a portal to hell could open.

Spiritually, it is also a day to find peace and balance, while many couples have decided it's the perfect date for their wedding.

In a more unusual take, the Corduroy Appreciation Club has named 11/11/11 as The Day That Most Resembles Corduroy, because it is made up of so many straight lines.

"Rejoice! Our day has come," heralds the club's website.

There's also something called the "11:11 phenomenon", which causes people to feel "haunted" by the number 11.

Byron Bay-based magical practitioner and astrologer Lucy Anna Rhoades said the date signalled a "decision point for us all".

"Over the past months we have been subject to wave upon wave of energy from the heavens," she said.

"Long transits of slow-moving and powerful planets have been working on our collective psyche.

"Pluto in the sign Capricorn is calling us to look at our collective shadow, at the way our world is organised, governed and structured.

"Uranus in Aries has been agitating and energising awakening and rebellion.

"Neptune is about to enter the sign of Pisces, its home sign, and our sensitivity, imagination and spirituality will get a huge boost, perhaps creating ideological struggles or perhaps greater enlightenment, or both."

Whether or not you believe in numerology and the importance of November 11, 2011, the numbers only line up like this once every 100 years, so it's the perfect opportunity to do something a bit out of the ordinary.

Why not don a pair of corduroy pants?

IMPORTANT DATES IN NUMEROLOGY

  • Friday the 13th: has been considered unlucky since Medieval times.
  • December 21, 2012: It is the end date of a Mayan calendar, and many believe it will mark the end of days for humans.
  • 8/8/2008: With the number 8 considered lucky in China, this was the starting date for the Beijing Olympics.
