It's beaut being your own boss

WHILE many dream of becoming their own boss, Robyn Cassidy simply fell into it.

Now 21 years later she owns three successful businesses and surrounds herself with everything a woman would want – hairstylists, beauty products and dedicated staff.

Robyn owns Rockhampton’s two R’na Hair Studio salons and The Wax Shack, the newest edition to her small empire.

For Robyn life as a sole trader is as good as they say.

Research conducted by St. George Bank showed 79% of sole traders have a healthier work-life balance, thus proving why nearly five million Australian would like to work for themselves.

However 62% of sole traders claim they work harder than they did as employees.

For Robyn, owning her own businesses means she can create the work culture and atmosphere she desires.

“I’ve integrated all my belief systems and made it how I want it to be,” she said.

And she must be doing something right as the success of the businesses speaks for themselves.

Robyn opened The Wax Shack, a beauty salon located in Northside Plaza, 12 months ago.

She started with two staff, managed by her daughter Libbie, and in the short time has employed three more workers full time.

The idea for The Wax Shack came as they developed a need to offer more services, such as beauty, tanning and massage, through the hair salons.

“The salon was just not big enough to expand in. Then when this came up it was perfect.”

Owning all businesses now enables Robyn to cross advertise between the two different services.

She said she moves between the three stores and with her daughter managing The Wax Shack, and the hair salons managed by Libbie Rodger and Aleesha Robson, she is able to take a step back and focus more on running the business.

“I could work for someone else but I enjoy this so much more,” she said.

But Robyn said none of her sucess would be possible without all her hard working staff.

Happy boss
  • 67% of sole traders are much happier being their own boss
  • 79% of sole trader business owners have a healthier work-life balance
  • 77% of Australians believe working for yourself means more felixibility
  • Only 10% in the workforce are actually self employed.
