It's time to give up and walk away from greyhound racing
THIS is going to sound a little strange, but I ask you to think seriously for a moment.
Imagine we are colonised by an alien race.
They're more intelligent than us and become our overlords.
Every week these overlords get together and laugh and cheer as they force us to run around and around a race track for their amusement.
Sometimes, they take the young, elderly or sick humans and shoot them or beat them to death - or at best - give them a lethal injection.
When other, more caring aliens object, these aliens say "no, it's perfectly normal, they love racing and besides, no one will miss the ones we shoot, this species keeps breeding anyway.
"They're just humans, they're not that smart and don't really know what's happening."
It may sound funny, but it's not.
Is it time for a complete stop to greyhound racing?
This poll ended on 09 April 2015.
This is not a scientific poll. The results reflect only the opinions of those who chose to participate.
How big are we as human beings if our pleasure in life comes from racing animals with the mental capacity of two-year-old children around a track?
Greyhound racing is an industry of waste.
It's an industry built on creating living beings only to kill them.
It's sad that in this day and age dog racing still has such a following when the reality is for it to happen, animals will die.
Not every greyhound from every litter bred can or will race.
That means whether by a needle, a bullet or other means, many of these dogs die and it's accepted as part of the world of dog racing.
In addition, the dogs that need to be rehomed because of racing place yet another strain on fully loaded rescues.
With the ability these days to have a punt on everything from football matches to elections, do we still need to be doing this for a bit of fun?
I think not.
The price these animals pay says we should give up and walk away so that someday we can look back and shake our heads at how this "sport" was ever a thing.
