It's time to stop and take a breath when driving

How many times have you gone to catch up with a colleague or friend only to be fobbed off because they're too busy with work, or their meeting ran over, or they're at their kids' soccer practice/bake off/school play?

If you're anything like me, it happens a lot (unless I'm just in denial about my unpopularity). The paradox of social media means we're always online and are yet constantly unavailable but scarily, this is also translating into our behaviour behind the wheel.

RACQ figures show 3746 Queenslanders were stung for ignoring a stop sign at an intersection last year, a jump of almost 500 on the previous year.

We're becoming increasingly impatient on our roads, and it's putting lives at risk.

For those who need a road rule refresher, you must come to a complete stop at a stop sign. Don't just slow down and hope for the best. The stop sign is there for a reason - traffic engineers have deemed that it is necessary for safety.

Believe it or not, a great deal of planning goes into the location and roll out of these signs. The bottom line is always the same, it's about your safety and the safety of other motorists and pedestrians.

So, when you're approaching a stop sign and you're running late don't just slow down and hope for the best. Stop means stop.

It's a few seconds, but it will ensure you're around for a few more.
