Cardno accountant jailed for $335k credit card theft

A QUEENSLAND accountant at global engineering firm Cardno must serve 15 months of a five-year jail sentence after using company credit cards to help a sick friend.

But Danielle Maguire kept using the cards for personal spending - such as nights in a Sunshine Coast penthouse, tertiary education and a child's school fees - after her sick friend died in 2010.

Crown prosecutor Sam Bain said the cards were used for purchases at a cinema, and various stores as well as government and energy payments.

Documents filed to the court alleged some of the money went towards pet cremation services, Weight Watchers and $1100 for two nights in a Coast penthouse.

Mr Bain said Maguire was able to hide the transactions by using her admin logon to delete the offending transactions from the system.

He said the offending continue for four years and four months and added up to just more than $335,000

Judge Fleur Kingham said the offence was a significant breach of trust and Maguire had a "sustained delusion" about what she was doing.
