Jail time for teen burglar with nine-page criminal history

A 19-YEAR-OLD with an "appalling criminal history" almost 10 pages long will be in jail until March after being convicted of burglary, wilful damage and obstructing police.

Tennison Benjamin Smith pleaded guilty in the Rockhampton Magistrates Court yesterday.

The court heard Smith entered a home on an unknown date sometime after November 19 where he stole several items.

He was also charged with wilful damage to a door and fence palings and obstructed police when they arrested him on November 25.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Darrell Dalton said the victim of the burglary reported it on November 22.

Sgt Dalton said Smith had broken in by removing a security screen from the kitchen window.

Smith then searched the house, stealing a mobile phone and iPad as well as other personal items.

Sgt Dalton said fingerprints were found at the scene.

Police arrested Smith on November 25, but as they took him back to the watchhouse, he broke free and ran from officers.

Sgt Dalton said he was found about five hours later.

Defence solicitor Shayne Studdert said Smith planned to sell the stolen items and give the money to his girlfriend.

Magistrate Jeffrey Clarke said Smith had violated other people's homes and "demonstrated no remorse".

He said Smith had an "appalling criminal history for a young person", with numerous convictions for similar charges.

Smith was convicted of burglary and sentenced to 12 months imprisonment, with parole on March 29, 2016. He was convicted of wilful damage with no further sentence and was sentenced to three months for obstruct police, to be served concurrently.
