Jamie Dwyer nominated for Philips Sports Dad of the Year

YOU'LL be hard pressed to find a better sporting dad than Rockhampton's Jamie Dwyer.

Away from the hockey field, Jamie is the doting father to Julian, Taj and Zara.

Even though he spends three or four months away a year with the Australian Kookaburras he still finds time to chat to his trio every day. His kids are what drives him to success.

Which Gracemere man was nominated for the Community Sports Dad of the Year award.

He has won Olympic gold in Athens, Bronze in London and Beijing and World Cups.

"They are a huge inspiration. My family give me a great balance in life and being with them simply makes me happy," Jamie said.

"I speak to them just about every day when I am away. I might miss a day here or there but it is so nice to see their faces and have a chat.

"Playing sports with the kids down at the local park is great fun and my favourite activity with them. I also just enjoy waking up and seeing their happy faces.

"After we won the World Cup in Holland they came onto the field to give me a cuddle and my last game in Australia, they walked on the field with me. That was special."

Wife Leonie said it is his hands on relationship that makes him a great father.

"He is always keen to play with them when he gets home even though he is super buggered from training," she said.

"He also loves coaching their hockey team and is very good at it."

For Julian, it is all about the presents dad brings home from his travels.

"He buys us presents when he gets back from his hockey trips," Julian said.

"He is a good hockey player and plays a lot of games with us."

Jamie is vying for the Philips Sports Dad of the Year award along with James Maloney, David Warner, Corey Parker, Simon Gerrans, Matthew Pavlich, Jarrad McVeigh, Brent Harvey, Garth Tander and Tim Cahill.
