Joey roo reaches for life after mum struck by car

IT'S the footage to break anyone's heart.

A mother kangaroo lays dying on the side of the road after being struck by a car.

But from her battered body, her newborn can be seen clawing at his mother's fur, unaware these will be the last moments within the safety of her pouch.

The joey, later named Dawson, was rescued by a passerby from the side of the road in Lancefield, Victoria.

His mother did not survive her injuries.

The Macedon Ranges Wildlife Network, which was called in for assistance, said Dawson was showing signs of overcoming the loss of his mother but warned the joey's tragic tale was all too familiar.

"Dawson is currently doing well in care and despite his long journey ahead, he has already been paired up with another little orphan of similar size," a spokesperson for the group wrote on Facebook.

"Please don't just hit an animal and leave them with broken legs, backs and severe head trauma, on the side of roads."

Contact WIRES if you hit wildlife or see any injured animals on 1300 094 737.
