Historic Denison St diner reopens under new name and owners

FOR the last three years, 288 Denison St has lay dormant.

But not any more.

Rockhampton couple John and Diann Mazzer have transformed the historic former Railway Cafe into a bustling diner under the name Denison St Diner and Take Away.

The diner, which is on the fringe of the CBD near the Denison Boutique Hotel and Great Western Hotel, was first opened in the 1940s as the Railway Cafe and serviced the Rockhampon Railway Station and its offices as well as the local community.

More recently, the store was known as Colleens Kitchen before the doors were closed three years ago.

The Mazzer family purchased the store 18 months ago for a bargain and after months of hard work renovating and upgrading the premises, reopened the store in December.

John said opening the diner was a natural step for the Mazzer family.

"We own a food van so it was a natural progression. We've run it for over three years. It's known as Diann's Snack Wagon," John said.

"The local businesses around here have been fantastic and the local popluation is really great.

"We have two employees that work for us as well as our son and our daughter sometimes comes and works with us as well."

From burgers to fish and chips, Diann said there was something for everyone at the Denison St Diner and Take Away.

"We sell fried foods from the hot box, burgers, battered chips, fish, sandwiches and wraps as well as drinks and icecreams," she said.
